Earlier driving tests and cancellations in Nottingham

Waiting times for a practical driving test in Nottingham can be long, and it is one of the questions we are asked most often: can I get an earlier date?

You can — but since 12 May 2026 it has to be you who does it.

What changed in May 2026

The DVSA now allows only the learner to book, move, swap or cancel their own car practical driving test. Driving instructors, driving schools and cancellation-finding services are no longer permitted to do any of that on your behalf.

That means Elevate cannot book a test for you, move one, or find you a cancellation — and neither can anyone else who offers to. If a service claims it can, it is not operating within the current rules.

How to find an earlier test yourself

Cancellations do appear, and they are free to look for. Everything you need is on the official service at GOV.UK:

• Sign in to your existing test booking with your driving licence number and booking reference.
• Use the change-test-date option to see what is currently available.
• Check more than one test centre — Colwick, Chilwell and Ashfield often differ by weeks.
• Look regularly rather than once. Slots are released as other candidates move or cancel, so availability changes through the day.
• Only use GOV.UK. Third-party sites charge for something that is free, and can no longer act for you in any case.

What we can still do

Quite a lot, as it happens — the rule change is about who presses the button, not about the teaching.

• Advise which Nottingham test centre tends to suit your driving and where you have been practising.
• Tell you honestly when we think you are ready, so you are not moving a date forward you are not prepared for.
• Fit lessons around a date you have managed to bring forward, including at short notice where we have space.
• Provide the car on the day and a warm-up lesson beforehand.
